During 2007, DCJP hosted its semi-annual PARENT EMPOWERMENT NIGHT events.
The events celebrate the POWER and INFLUENCE of effective parenting. Parents learn about reconciliation and the need for children to grow up in peaceful households. Parents are informed of the nuts and bolts of household economics and importance of laying a sound financial foundation for their children and family. Parents also are presented with presentations that are aimed at helping them rediscover the great significance and value of community involvement and crime prevention!
Speakers throughout the sessions included, Detroit Police Sgt. Kevin D. Miller, Detroit Police Officer Myra Gracey, Detroit Police Officer Michael Gordon, Laurie Moore from Looking For My Sister, members of the Pioneers for Peace organization, CPR trainers, and Dr. Mary Taylor form the Learning Institute of Family Education. All of the speakers emphasized the many ways parents can serve as the first line of defense against negative behaviors in their children. Each speaker reflected on his/her own personal and professional experiences which resulted in stirring and unforgettable presentations, all which helped the parents in attendance obtain the skills to raise resilient children.
Children of the participants participated in separate interactive and exciting learning activities and learned the value of team building, leadership and following directions in the DCJP Youth Leadership Academy class conducted on the same night.
