EDUCATION FOR YOUTH - D.E.F.Y.
ANNUAL DEFY CAMP
Celebrating its 11th year, DCJP provided a summer camp experience for 24 northwest Detroit area youth at its annual Drug Education for Youth Camp at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mt. Clemens, MI. The northwest Detroit area youth were joined by 75 other youth from across the region.
The DEFY experience is a six-day non-residential camp held at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in
Mt. Clemens, Michigan. The 100 youth who participated in the Camp were from six Weed and Seed communities of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan (Northwest Detroit,
Eastern District, Central District, Highland Park,
Inkster, and Flint), as well as the Guard Base.

The curriculum, which was developed by the U.S. Navy Drug Demand Reduction Department, included important skills such as setting goals, avoiding violent conflicts, refusing an offer of drugs from a friend, gang awareness, and peer pressure resistance. During the Camp, the children also engaged in activities such as swimming, bowling, fishing, boating, and aerobics. Presentations were made by representatives from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Agency (ATF).
Northwest Detroit Weed and Seed Detroit Police officers play active roles in Phase I and Phase II of the DEFY Program.

At the end of the week long program the youth were presented with Certificates of Completion and a canvas back-pack filled with school supplies and resource information.
Phase II of the DEFY experience begins after the youth return from camp and is a 10-month mentoring program involving educational, as well as, recreational activities designed to promote drug prevention awareness and self-esteem. They are escorted by Detroit police officers and community mentors who maintain a presence in their school and home lives throughout the Phase II experience.
