Northwest Detroit Weed and Seed's Community Development commitment includes, prevention, intervention, technical assistance, mini grants to organizations, and community awareness projects. This commitment comprises the "seeding" aspect of Weed and Seed and involves coordinating new or existing services to assist in reducing and preventing problem behaviors and criminal activity in Northwest Detroit.
Since 2000, Northwest Detroit Weed and Seed has implemented its “Community Opportunity Grant” which is designed to help community-based agencies or organizations obtain additional resources to support activities promoting the Weed and Seed elements of prevention, intervention and treatment and neighborhood revitalization, and gun violence prevention.
In addition, Northwest Detroit Weed and Seed's youth prevention component centers around the Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) Program which is an outreach program consisting of summer camp (Phase I), mentoring, workshops, and special events (Phase II) for Northwest area youth.
In 1999, Northwest Detroit Weed and Seed launched its Detroit READS program. The goal of the America Reads Challenge is to mobilize Americans across the Nation to ensure that all children read well and independently by the end of third grade.
The Northwest Detroit America Reads Initiative involves "safe centers" in Northwest Detroit. These safe centers serve as reading sites where children can, not only receive tutoring, but a variety of information and services. We have collaborated with Wayne County Community College as well as the Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) and the Failure Free Reading Program. Wayne County Community College provided Federal Work-Study students who served as tutors; Failure Free and the LVA trained the students and adult tutors. |
