About
Project Sentry
Project Sentry is the Eastern District of Michigan's
way of trying to reduce gun violence. Through Project Sentry, partners from various
areas of the community have joined together to conduct a three-day workshop for
middle school youth on the dangers of guns and violence. Our in-school Youth Gun
Violence Prevention Program is a program designed to educate students about the
medical, legal, emotional and societal consequences of gun violence. The program
is unique in that it is taught by students, medical doctors and nurses, lawyers,
law enforcement, and other social service groups.
Project Sentry also
has Sentry Clubs, which is designed to teach students in targeted middle schools
life skills through the game of Chess. Our Chess: The Game of Life program is
a 10 week, one hour per day, per week program designed to teach children how to
plan ahead and think strategically, while at the same time showing them how to
play the game of chess. The program teaches students how to resolve conflicts,
as well as increase their attention span and reasoning skills.
Lastly,
Project Sentry has Project Impact, which is a program designed to demonstrate
to troubled students what happens when you are incarcerated for making poor choices.
It is an effort of local, state and federal law enforcement, the courts, the department
of corrections, state agencies, and local middle schools to join together to have
a positive and serious impact on the lives of our youth.
Hopefully, Project
Sentry through one of these programs will be able to touch your child's life in
a positive way. It is also our hope that you will partner with us by attending
one of our parent's workshops on gun safety and learn how to properly secure and
lock any guns and ammunition in your home away from your child.
If you
are interested in any of Project Sentry's initiatives, please contact our Project
Safe Neighborhood hotline at 1-800-891-8881 to see what programs are offered in
your area. Please talk with your child about guns and gun violence. We all have
to join together to protect the lives of our youth from violence.
