Wayne State University Completes its
5-Year Parent University Evaluation
DCJP’s Parent University is a community-based educational program to empower parents and build their skills to more effectively serve as first line of defense against deviant behaviors and negative habits developing in their children. The information and training provided to parents focuses on skill-building and developing strategies to address a variety of risk factors facing youth and to promote healthy positive lifestyle choices among family members.
The Parent University focuses on improving parent capabilities and knowledge in seven content areas that impact youth and overall family functioning.
Physical Development (Nutrition and Health; Sexuality; Substance Abuse)
Intellectual Development (Education; Finances; Time/Anger/Stress Management; Fire Safety and Gun Violence Prevention)
Emotional Development (Self Esteem; Decision-Making; Goal Setting; Discipline)
Social Development (Effective Communication; Divorce and Single Parenting; Peer Pressure)
Spiritual Development (Morals/Values/ Languages of Love)
Crime Prevention/Conflict Resolution/Reconciliation (presentations from law enforcement and certified nonviolence practitioners; survivors of gun shot injuries and violence)
According to Dr. David Martin, of Wayne State University, lead evaluator, “Overall, the data exhibits patterns that suggest the program is clearly having positive effects on its participants.” To view a copy of the full Evaluation Report click here.
