Metro Youth Day

DCJP had a great summer committed to youth. In July 2007, through the support of the Public Housing Safety Initiative (PHSI), DCJP hosted the residents of the Smith Homes Public Housing to Metro Youth Day in at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, MI. This outing served a means of engaging the youth of the Smith Homes in activities, games, and lessons with other youth from around Detroit and its surrounding areas. Also, this outing served as a means of connecting parents and families to various health, school, and service-related resources that are available to them from the city of Detroit.

The Public Housing Safety Initiative (PHSI) is an initiative established by the Department of Justice to ensure that programming and resources are made available to Public Housing residents. The overall goals of DCJP’s Public Housing Safety Initiative are:

  • To positively impact parents and residents residing in the designated public housing properties through directed workshops and parent/community empowerment sessions conducted on site at each housing complex.
  • To positively impact youth of all ages residing in the designated public housing properties with messages and lessons of gun and violence prevention utilizing various presentations.

Metro Detroit Youth Day was founded in 1981, following altercations between youngsters and area store owners on Livernois Ave. between 6 and 7 Mile roads, and has a goal of bringing together Metro Detroit area youngsters from diverse backgrounds. The day include supervised sports clinics, games, contests, a free lunch, motivational speakers, entertainment, the awarding of annual scholarships, and various other activities.

Youth Day has received a number of awards and honors, including the Point of Light Award, as well as the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness Award as the largest youth event in Michigan. This annual event brings together youths, ages 8 - 15, and volunteers for a free day of food, fun and education.
