YOUTH Detroit
Community Justice Partnership Gun Violence Prevention Project is committed to
positively and effectively impacting youth in elementary, middle and high schools
in northwest Detroit through directed messages intended to disrupt apathetic attitudes
toward gun violence and crime. The Detroit Community Justice Partnership
Gun Violence Prevention Project's Youth Education Program is an anti-violence
information presentation designed for middle and high school youth. The Program
is modeled after the “Options, Choices, and Consequences” Program
developed by the City of Seattle’s Campaign Against Violence Project. The
Youth Education Program informs youth of the negative consequences, both legal
and medical, which result from gun use and violence. The Program focuses on the
immediate and long-term physical and emotional results of gunshot injuries; the
law; statistics; and common myths about gunshot trauma. The presentations also
focus on the importance of calm and peaceful solutions to conflict and arguments.
The classroom-hour presentation is conducted by a representative from the
Michigan State Police, the Detroit Police Department, the Wayne County Prosecutor's
Office, and a health professional. In addition, elected officials, judges, and
community leaders have participated in presentations and serve as role models
to the youth.
With the increasing amount of gun-related crime and death among youth, as well as, the amount of violence shown through the media that de-sensitizes our youth, we are sure you will agree that this program, with its many aspects, will serve as a great catalyst in ensuring our youth live long, healthy and productive lives. It will not only educate our youth, but present to them alternative choices in avoiding violent situations and conflict.
